Your New Ragdoll Cat Shopping List

ragdoll cat shopping list

Are you bringing a new ragdoll cat home? Congratulations! Here’s a shopping list of essential items you’ll need to take care of your furry friend:

Travel

Pet Carrier – Whether you opt for a ‘hard’ carrier or ‘soft carrier,’ a pet carrier is a must-have to transport your ragdoll cat safely to the vet or anywhere else. Leave the carrier open with soft bedding in it when not in use to create a positive association, making it easier to put your kitty in the carrier when necessary. You can also hide treats, toys, or catnip in the carrier to make it even more appealing.

Elimination

Litter Box- Provide your ragdoll cat with a clean litter box that’s scooped thoroughly every day. Some cats will refuse to use a dirty litter box, so keep it fresh and clean at all times.

PRO TIP: For every ragdoll cat you have, you should have an extra litter box. For example, if you have 3 ragdoll cats, you should have 4 litter boxes.

Scoop for litter box- Use a scoop to remove waste from the litter.

Litter- Clumping litter is a popular choice for many cat owners. If you save grocery bags, you can scoop the solids into a grocery bag and throw it away. Non-clumping litter would require you to dump the entire litter box daily.

Pro tip: Add Cat Attract to the litter for the first month or so to help your ragdoll cat find the litter box.

Hand broom and dustpan- Keep a hand broom and dustpan nearby to sweep up any stray litter kicked outside of the box.

General Care

Food- Your ragdoll cat is currently eating Stella & Chewys Freeze dried Raw and Kibble, We recommend keeping them on this for the first year. You’ll be sent home with a trial bag of food to mix into the food you decide to use. This technique helps minimize any upset stomach caused by switching foods too quickly!

Food and water bowls – Provide your ragdoll cat with food and water bowls. You can choose from a variety of options, including plastic, ceramic, or stainless steel.

Nail Clippers- Use special scissors-style cat clippers sold at pet stores to trim your ragdoll cat’s nails. The younger you start, the better for both of you. Offer treats during or after the nail trim to create positive associations! If you’re uncomfortable with trimming your cat’s nails, you can always reach out to your veterinarian for assistance.

Entertainment

Cat scratchers- Provide your ragdoll cat with plenty of scratching toys to prevent them from relieving their scratching urge on your furniture. Add some catnip to make it especially attractive!

Toys- Keep your ragdoll cat occupied with a variety of toys throughout the day. Cats almost universally love teaser toys (fishing pole type) and toy mice like the ones pictured below. You can also find cat toys made of catnip, which most felines love. Be careful not to leave anything with feathers out unattended, as cats may tear off the feathers and swallow them, putting them at risk of intestinal obstruction.

Cat Furniture- Invest in carpet-covered perches or towers where your ragdoll cat can hang out high and look out the window or watch their people from above. This can significantly reduce boredom and stress.

By purchasing these essential items, you’ll be well on your way to providing your new feline friend with a happy and healthy home. Don’t forget to offer plenty of love and attention as well!
